Toropets is one of the most ancient cities in the Tver region, indirectly mentioned in 1074. It is included in the list of Historical Settlements of Russia, approved in July 2010 by a joint order of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Regional Development No. 418/339.
An urban legend says that it was in Toropets that the wedding of Alexander Nevsky and the daughter of Bryacheslav Polotsky took place in 1239. Toropets is also famous for the fact that it has preserved buildings constructed in an unusual architectural style, which was called "Toropets Baroque".
