Description
Hello & Welcome,This is an antique Porcelain Half Doll ~ Pierrot Style
This adorable little Pierrette is playing a mandolin. Auburn locks curl from beneath the traditional black skull cap and the characteristic wistful expression is enhanced by heavy grey eyeshadow. This little half doll is absolutely adorable and one I contemplated keeping. The painting is so well done and would make such a cute pincushion /powder puff doll.
This half doll is a small size and is just 2 & 3/8 inches tall. There were 3 sizes of this half doll. It came in 4 3/4 inches, 4 inches and 2 3/8 inches.
References can be found in The Collector's Encyclopedia of Half Dolls by Frieda Marion and Norma Werner on page 414.
The reference is of a large size of this same style half doll but none the less it is the same mold.
Incised with the mold numbers 5822
You can also find reference to this half doll on page 180 in The Half-Doll Volume one by Shona & Marc Lorrin. This little one could have sat atop a powder puff set of legs.
In any event it is a wonderful antique piece and would make a treasured addition to any collection.
I do not know for certain who the manufacturer is but I assume based on what I have researched that it was made by Foulds & Freure, Inc. I can not be certain but one thing I am certain of is that this is a quality piece and very nicely done. Just an adorable little Pierrot half doll holding a Mandolin.
This half doll comes from my private collection.
She has been in my family for a very long time. My Grandmother was a very serious collector of half dolls and I inherited the love for them as well. My Grandmother had duplicates of so many simply because over the years as she collected and her collection grew and grew, she tended to forget what she owned.
I think her reasoning on this was when she was out looking for more to add to her collection....."when it doubt....buy it, when I get home I will find out". LOL
She could never part with them, even if she already had the same half doll. She kept them all. :)
Once she purchased or in many cases was gifted a half doll she didn't get rid of it.
She was a master seamstress and often times she would make them into a pincushion if she had duplicates.
Many she used in her sewing room. I am thinning out the collection as I have no way to display them all.
Many have been packed away in steamer trunks and these beauties are far too pretty to not be seen and enjoyed.
This doll has been lovingly cared for and comes from a smoke free home.
