HISTORIC! Here's a 24-page
1938
S.S. Manhattan
luxury liner booklet listing the names of all the Cabin Class Passengers (first class). Among those sailing
June 15, 1938
from New York to Cobh, Plymouth, Havre and Hamburg, were the Baroness Van Eck,
"Honey Fitz"
Grandfather of John F. Kennedy
and
J.Willard Roosevelt, grandson of Teddy Roosevelt.
Also,
Grace Thompson Seton
, a suffragette, feminist, author of book and travel books.
John F. Fitzgerald
(known as Honey Fitz) also was the former Mayor of Boston and a Democratic political force, who helped propel his second grandson, John F. Kennedy, to the Presidency. I couldn't find any corroborating facts that this John F. Fitzgerald was
The Fitzgerald,
but I'm willing to bet it was, since I couldn't find any other prominent John F. Fitzgeralds in 1938. Presuming it was Honey Fitz, he sailed with Mrs. Fitzgerald (no first name listed). The SS Manhattan also sailed the 1936 Olympic Team to Germany and, also,in 1938, JFK's other grandfather, Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy Sr., to Britain. In 1939, it sailed 88 unescorted Jewish refugee children from Hamburg, as part of the Kindertransport. When the U.S. entered WWII, the S.S. Manhattan transformed into the Wakefield troop ship.
I can't find another 1938 Cabin Class (wealthy) List of S.S.Manhattan Passengers online, but I did find one from another date in some Archives. There were probably more luminaries aboard, but this is memorable for the names we found, bound for Europe just before WWII.
And, rare for collectors of this beautiful ocean liner and John F. Fitzgerald. Please view the listing photos to see his name, and for condition details. The booklet, on heavy paper, is clean and bright. It contains a list of the officers and a list of United States Lines, to and from Europe in 1938.The last page lists the United States Lines officer in Europe. The only note is the damage to the back cover, which I suspect was caused when removing it from a scrapbook. However, the book is intact - and who looks at the back, anyway. This rare booklet will be sent, carefully packed, with tracking.
