Description
This is a very nice, quite scarce, silver
"Fanon"
or
"One-Fifth Rupee"
from the French colonial city of Mahé on the southwest coast of India. Please see the map below. It was struck, by hand, sometime between 1738 and 1792, at the French mint in Pondichery, on the southeast coast.
"French Colonial"
India consisted of geographically separate enclaves on the Indian subcontinent. Originally acquired by the French East India Company during the latter 17th century, they were incorporated into the Republic of India by 1954. The French establishments included Pondichery, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahé on the Malabar Coast and Chandernagor in Bengal.

The Coin:
Beautiful in its own way, it has toned with some very pretty colors. It saw some use as money but not a lot. Quite a nice piece of history. As grading is subjective please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
